Linux ?

Linux is an operating system which was assembled under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. The main component of Linux is the Linux kernel, The first release of this Linux was done by Linus Torvalds in Oct 1991.

It was originally developed as a free operating system for Intel x86-based personal computers but now it supports nearly all the computer hardware's. Mainly it is used on servers, mainframes, supercomputers but now a days it is being heavily used in mobile devices some of the examples are Maemo, MeeGo, Android etc.

The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration: the underlying source code may be used, modified, and distributed—commercially or non-commercially—by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License.

Some of the Linux flavors are:

  • RHEL: Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Suse.
  • Fedora.
  • Mandriva.
  • Debian.
  • Ubuntu.... and many more.

A Linux-based system is a modular Unix-like operating system. It derives much of its basic design from principles established in Unix during the 1970s and 1980s. Such a system uses a monolithic kernel, there are few other types of kernels present like microlithic (example: Windows) and Hybrid Kernel (example:Mac OS).

In this blog we will basically talk about RHEL i.e. Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
